Aloha Untranslatable Words

Updated: Apr 1, 2019

Describe why this term intrigues you and how you have experienced it in your life. How might you incorporate it into your everyday vocabulary from now on?

Aloha translates and is commonly used as hello. This word is not restricted to Hawaiian. In New Zealand the Maori use a similar word Aroha. Although aloha as a simple greeting does not encompass the whole definition. Aloha is also a lifestyle. A lifestyle of compassion sympathy and kindness. I have observed this idea of Aloha in the organization Nakamakai, people doing work that benefits others teaching younger generations of the ocean. In communities as they are welcoming of others and expressing the ideas of kindness. I feel it is less important to incorporate this in my day to day vocabulary but rather my actions as a member of my community. Being more welcoming and kind to others.
